Emma Parsons

EDGE HILL COLLEGE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Degree: Primary Teaching and Learning Support

Emma studied for her Foundation Degree on a part-time basis, and works as a Teaching Assistant at a primary school. Her employer supported her studies by giving her time off to attend college and study without deducting this time from her pay, and also by appointing a mentor who supported and encouraged Emma during her three years of study and helped to facilitate her work-base d learning.

When Emma embarked on the Foundation Degree she was employed as a teaching assistant, supporting individuals and groups of pupils in lessons. She progressed to teaching whole classes which she has enjoyed, and has inspired her to continue her studies in order to become a qualified teacher. Emma also became a Leader of the Outdoor Play in her school, and became more valued by colleagues for her advice and opinions. Emma felt that the Foundation Degree gave her the confidence to progress further in her career.

Emma received a commendation in her Foundation Degree when graduating in July 2005, and she was the highest achieving young student on the Primary Foundation Degree at Edge Hill. She successfully passed the bridging course, and has progressed to Level 3 of a BA (Hons) in Child Development and Learning with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), which she is studying on a full-time basis.
