Maureen Ainsworth Edge Hill College of Higher Education Degree: Primary Teaching and Learning Support
|
Maureen undertook her Foundation Degree on a part-time basis while working full-time as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant at a primary school, and also caring for her three sons. The school supported her by paying her course fees, giving her time off to attend college and study, and appointing a mentor to support her throughout her studies and help facilitate her wo rk-based learning. When Maureen embarked on the Foundation Degree she was employed as a Nursery nurse supporting pupils in lessons. She then progressed to covering PPA time with 60% whole class teaching and some aspects of the SENCO’s role (Special Educa tional Needs Co-ordinator). This also involves a great deal of planning and assessment which she would have found challenging without the Foundation Degree. She is now fully involved in liaising with parents, including parent interviews. Maureen has also t rained and recently been assessed for HLTA status, fully supported by her school. As a result of studying for the Foundation Degree, Maureen has been able to take on the role as mentor for other Teaching Assistants within the school, offering support and t raining with learning support programmes. Maureen achieved a commendation for her Foundation Degree, with an average grade of 69% (narrowly missing a distinction) when graduating in July 2005. She was the highest achieving student on the Primary Foundation Degree at Edge Hill.
